Matkahuolto is rapidly expanding its network of parcel lockers – 10 million investment aims for a network of over 2,000 parcel lockers

21.10.2024

Matkahuolto will expand its network of parcel lockers by investing around EUR 10 million in new parcel lockers by 2027. The investment is driven by the company’s strong growth objective.

Matkahuolto currently has more than 2,300 service points in its network, of which almost a thousand are parcel lockers. Besides its own parcel lockers, Matkahuolto’s network will also include parcel lockers operated by its partners, from which you can pick up Matkahuolto parcels. The total number of parcel lockers in the network will be more than 2,000 as a result of the investments.

The first new Matkahuolto parcel lockers will be installed already this autumn and will be supplied by Cleveron, a leading player in the industry. For the parcel season at the end of the year, new parcel lockers operated by Matkahuolto and its partners will be opened in around 130 locations across Finland. In addition, Matkahuolto’s existing parcel lockers will be expanded.

New parcel lockers are being introduced in various parts of Finland along consumers’ everyday routes, for example in shops and shopping centres. Some of the new parcel lockers will be installed outdoors, such as along the walls of shops and apartment buildings or in car parks. This makes them easily accessible to customers, whatever the time of day.

Driven by a strong growth strategy – and Finns’ love of parcel lockers

Although the general economic uncertainty and weakening consumer purchasing power have also been reflected in the e-commerce and parcel market in recent years, Matkahuolto has succeeded in strengthening its market share and position as Finland’s most valued parcel carrier in line with its strategy.

A year ago, we launched a very ambitious growth strategy, aiming for up to 70% revenue growth by 2027. Our goal is to increase the number of parcels transported per year from the current 20 million to 30 million," says Mika Husso, CEO of Matkahuolto.

Finns love parcel lockers perhaps more than anywhere else in the world. More than 70% of Matkahuolto customers say they prefer to pick up their parcel from a parcel locker.

According to a survey we conducted last spring, it’s really important for Finns to receive their parcel exactly where they ordered it. With the new parcel lockers, we can offer Finns an even better customer experience,” Mika Husso adds.

Matkahuolto develops its network by listening to customers’ wishes

In addition to parcel lockers, Matkahuolto’s extensive service point network includes more than 1,000 parcel points offering personal service, which are located in shops and kiosks that are open throughout the week and have long opening hours.

Although the popularity of parcel lockers has grown, some consumers prefer parcel points offering personal service. That’s why we are developing our network in a variety of ways, bringing new parcel points and lockers to where consumers want them. We have the largest network for providing personal service in Finland, and this will continue to be the case,” Mika Husso notes.

The company has accurate data on where customers would like to see new parcel points and lockers, but expansion has been slowed by the limited number of suitable premises and the fact that they are often reserved.

We have successfully addressed the problem of limited premises together with our parcel point partners. Ideally, a parcel locker can be found, for example, in the lobby of the same store where there is also a parcel point offering personal service. Customers should not have to do the work of a parcel delivery company and run around town to get their parcels,” Mika Husso concludes.
